The Picasso, Tàpies and Miró Museums are celebrating anniversaries and Barcelona, the city that welcomed and inspired these artists, wants to pay them the homage they deserve. This year is the year of Picasso, next year is the year of Tàpies while 2025 is the year of Miró. A triennial of artistic commemoration for three universal artists who are a fundamental part of the Articket world through the three museums that celebrate them: the Museu Picasso, the Fundació Joan Miró and the Fundació Antoni Tàpies.
A shared commitment
The shared friendship among these three artists is one of the common threads of the upcoming homages, because there was an unquestioned bond and admiration among them.
Picasso and Miró met each other in Paris when Miró brought the Malaga-born painter a traditional ensaimada pastry made by Miró’s mother. Picasso opened the doors to a Paris full of opportunities to Miró which would mark a turning point in the artist’s career. Tàpies also met Miró in 1948, striking up an enduring friendship, while he met Picasso in 1951 at his workshop in Paris. In fact, for the centennial celebration of Picasso’s birth in 1981, Tàpies dedicated a work to him on Barcelona’s Passeig de Picasso, next to Ciutadella Park where we can still enjoy it today. 2023, a year to rediscover Picasso
A young Picasso started making his artistic creations in Barcelona in 1895. He would later bequeath them to the city and its citizens with the creation of the world’s first museum dedicated to exhibiting his work. 2023 marks 60 years since the museum’s founding and also commemorates the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death.
For these two anniversaries, the Museu Picasso is offering a variety of international exhibitions to celebrate, discuss and analyse Picasso’s work. Entitled We Speak Picasso, the museum seeks to awaken people’s curiosity about the artist’s presence in Barcelona and the connections he formed, as well as start up a dialogue with the city’s residents. This is an opportunity to get to know the artist, discover the person behind the art and rediscover the Picasso Museum. In short, it’s an opportunity to admire the artist at our museum.

Miró-Picasso, an essential exhibition and two anniversaries
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Joan Miró’s death, the Fundació Joan Miró and the Museu Picasso are preparing the Miró-Picasso exhibition, which will take place simultaneously in the two museums in Barcelona from 19 October 2023 to 25 February 2024.
The common thread of the exhibition is based on two essential concepts: on the one hand, the artists’ lifelong friendship, which can be appreciated in works and documents that include their encounters, agreements and disagreements in the artistic field, and on the other, their recognition in Barcelona, which took shape in the legacy the two artists left in the city in the form of singular museums that bear their names.
This will be the first time that the Joan Miró Foundation and the Picasso Museum jointly organize, produce and host a single exhibition in the two institutions which, on their own, are clear examples of Miró and Picasso’s intense and extensive relationship with the city of Barcelona.
Tàpies is alive. Long live Tàpies: a call to give a universal artist his due
This year, on 13 December, the museum will celebrate the centennial of the artist’s birth and the start of the Year of Tàpies, with exhibitions, educational activities, unique events and creative and research projects which will last throughout 2024.
Tàpies is alive. Long live Tàpies sums up the spirit of the agenda. On the one hand, the aim is to showcase how the artist’s work is still valuable today and, on the other, the goal is to incorporate a chorus of voices from new generations to revisit and reinterpret the artist’s legacy.
Tàpies had the distinction of anticipating our times by crafting ecological, anticolonialist works based on universal values. That’s why the Year of Tàpies not only strives to be an occasion for celebration, but also a call to showcase ideas that are still necessary and urgent.

And in 2025… 50 years of the Fundació Joan Miró!
The Fundació opened to the public on 10 June 1975 and since then it has become a dynamic space where the art of Joan Miró coexists alongside today’s most contemporary artistic creation.
Soon we will discover what they have prepared for us to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this building by the architect Josep Lluís Sert, one of the few examples of museums in the world in which the artist and the architect worked closely together to create a perfect understanding between the works of art on display and the spaces that exhibit them.
